The Other Wife

Hour she asked Libby for helpAs the lines between what is right and wrong become blurred we are left wondering If your friend asked you to help her to diewhat would you d. I wish GoodReads could do half star ratings as I would give this two and a half stars not two A number between one and five seems far too broad for judging so many books don t you think Anyway I digressI ll get one negative out of the way with this book was in need of a good edit I see that there were a number of proofreaders but I found a LOT of typos and mistakes throughout the book one on the first page particularly concerning the punctuation of direct speech Now many people will think I m being pernickety and unnecessary but to me it is very important to get this sort of thing right As any author knows it takes about ten times as long to do the editing process as it does to write the original novel no exaggeration It gives a professional feel to a book particularly when it is self published and it s very important for an author to communicate effectively with their readers Grammar spelling and punctuation mistakes get in the way of this communication and this is a real shame I am acutely aware as I m writing this that I will probably made lots of mistakes and people will call me hypocritical Sorry if this is the case I enjoyed this than I expected to having said that It was an engaging interesting narrative and a controversial subject very sensitively and deftly handled I liked the characters of Libby and Rose and found them believable even in this terribly difficult situation If only everyone could be as good as Libby Robert I found harder to relate to and I felt as though I didn t get him as a character The point of view shifts were very interesting but I think slightly overdone The first part of he book was great alternating between the two different perspectives but the latter part of the book felt a little confusing As each narrative character got a comparatively small amount of air time it felt a little unsatisfactory we were offered their perspective but not enough which made them appear a little shallow when they were simply underdeveloped For example I felt that having sections from Edd s point of view didn t really work for me there wasn t enough of his character shown to have a real backbone to these sectionsThe surprises were exciting I guessed the first one literally two pages before it happened and I thought that it worked very well I was also very smug that I figured it out before Libby However the final twist for me just did not work it was too out of the blue too far fetched and unbelievable For that reason I have marked it down a bitAs well as the actual errors in the text there were sections that could have done with a real tidying up as the language was sometimes awkward or stilted Again this all comes down to very thorough rewrites and editingOverall a promising novel keep writing I was very touched by Brooke donating money to ALS charities and think this is much better than the ice bucket challenge although that did of course generate a lot knowledge of the disorder I received this as a prize in a GoodReads giveaway thank you but all thoughts and opinions are completely my own

characters The Other Wife

Two ordinary women One extraordinary choiceElisabeth Jones has been placed under arrest for killing Rose Boston The same Rose Boston that her husband Rob once had an affai. Oh this is difficult The overall premise of the book is great full of potential I was looking forward to reading it Overall standing back from it a little I think it s worth 3 stars However the devil is in the detail Their were grammatical errors that a good proofreader should ve picked up on POTENTIAL SPOILER ALERT Please look away now if you don t want to know the score Little things like could someone who s been tagged and isn t allowed past their own drive take their child for a treat at a local cafe I admit I don t know maybe If someone is wearing a bipap device how would pillow fibres get into their mouth Why was there even a post mortem done The death may well have been reported to the coroner but clearly this was someone who was terribly terminally ill soOk you can look now As I say I think the narrative is intriguing and brave but it was let down by details

I was intrigued by the blurb and having recently read a book on assisted suicide thought this would be good to compare There were a few small things that I didn't like For a book set in the UK I don't understand why the term ALS was used throughout rather than motor neurone disease I didn't enjoy the inner dialogue of Libby as she seemed to be continually asking uestions of herself and for me it would have read better in
